For nearly four decades, the clucking rabbit has been closely associated with Cadbury Crème Eggs and the Easter season. When it comes to branding sweet treats, few mascots are as recognizable as the Cadbury Bunny. Over the years, however, Cadbury has experimented with other animals stepping into the role. Pigs, cats, and even lions have all tried filling the iconic bunny’s shoes.
Now, it seems Cadbury may have found a new face for the Crème Egg campaign: an 18-month-old English bulldog named Henry from Wilmington, North Carolina.
To select the new mascot, Cadbury held its first official “tryout” to replace the famous bunny. The contest attracted more than 4,000 submissions from animal owners across the United States, featuring a wide range of hopefuls—including a llama, a goat, a horse, and even a few lizards. After careful deliberation—and with help from celebrity judge Doug the Pug—Henry was declared the winner.
And if you watch him in action, it’s easy to see why. Henry proved to be a consummate professional: he took direction well, hit all his cues, and brought the kind of cheerful energy that’s rare among today’s stars. Of course, it also helps that he’s an adorable, wrinkly puppy.
Henry will star in the Cadbury campaign beginning in early April this year and will receive a $5,000 prize. In addition, Cadbury will donate $10,000 to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. For fans of cute animals, there’s hope that the bunny “tryouts” will become an annual tradition—giving plenty more furry hopefuls for everyone to admire.
