On-lookers got to see something special on Memorial day last Monday at Canterbury
Park’s “Running of the Bulldogs.”
41 entrants will be taking place in the race. Pork Chop weighing in at 60lbs is an English Bulldog that will be racing this year. Last year he took place in the event plcing fourth.His trainer Berg syas he has a secret wepon htis year. Pork Chop has been sleeping only 16 hours a day down from 17 hours. That extra hour has gone into additional training time. Surely joking. Hopefully! :-)
The race is divided into 4 heats which will be spaced out between horse races at the track. The top dogs from each heat will then compete against each other for the final race.The races are 30 yards in length.

Pictured below is Jackson named after singer Michael Jackson is a 60-pounder like Pork Chop,
and above is Fergie, which is the lightest at about 45 pounds and the only
female in the group.
Last year Jackson had to get treatment for a damaged ACL (yes, apparently dogs have ACL problems as well), but he’s rebounded into fine running and jumping form.
“He
goes all day and doesn’t stop,” said Dan Beckstrom, Jackson’s
self-described dog grandpa. “But I’m interested to see if he’ll go in a
straight line.” lol
There is no wagering on the bulldog races (not officially, anyway), though these types of sideshows have become part of the program at Canterbury in recent years.

They plan on having other races as well with ostriches, zebras, camels and wiener
dogs.
For now, though, bulldogs take center stage.
“He loved it,” Berg said of Pork Chop’s romp last year. “He had so much fun. … He felt like a superstar for
a day.”
