Tips To Keep Your Dog Safe For The Winter

When it's cold outside, winter pet safety measures can spare your beloved animal any needless snowy mishaps. Dogs need special care during the winter months to stay healthy. Not only must they deal with the cold as we do, but also snow, ice, and road salt on paws and fur, which could cause potential health issues. When the mercury drops, these eight safety tips can keep your dog happy, healthy and comfortable during the winter months.

Keep dogs inside: Although it's true that Alaskan Malamutes spend much of their time in the snow and ice, most pets get just as cold as we do when outside for prolonged periods of time. Dogs can succumb to hypothermia and frostbite, too. If temperatures drop below freezing, bring your cat inside.
Shorten walks and wipe paws when you get home: During bitterly cold days, you may have to shorten your dog's walks to prevent frostbite or exposure to cold. Use your best judgment; if you don't want to be outside, chances are good that your pet doesn't want to be outside for too long, either.

Road salt may become embedded in the pads of your dog's feet, causing harsh drying, cracks and even bleeding. A dog can also accidentally poison themselves if they lick road salt off their feet, too. Keep a cloth near the door of your home and wipe your dog's feet after any walks.
Take your dog in for a checkup: Make sure your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinations. Older dogs, and dogs with joint issues and arthritis, should also be checked by a veterinarian. They may need their pain medications adjusted to compensate for flare-ups during cold weather.
Learn the signs of hypothermia: Dogs who shiver, whine or appear weak may be suffering from hypothermia. Get them inside and call your veterinarian immediately.
Make sure dogs have collars, identification tags or a microchip: This is a good idea all year round, but it makes even more sense during cold weather. If your dog gets lost, identification tags or a microchip may save a life by bringing them home quickly and safely to you.
Avoid icy areas: Dogs can slip and fall just like people can. Iced-over ponds are difficult to judge; a dog's weight may be just enough to break through the surface.
Clean up antifreeze spills: Antifreeze is poisonous to dogs. A spill can be extremely dangerous to a curious pet! Clean up any antifreeze spills promptly.
Be prepared: Emergency preparedness isn't just for people. You've probably got some bottled water, batteries, flashlights and canned food stored somewhere in your home in the event of a blizzard or power outage. But what about supplies for your pets? Make sure you have plenty of dog food and any medications stored for your pet in the event that a snowstorm makes roads impassable.
When the weather outside is frightful, you can make your pet's experience delightful by taking extra steps to ensure their comfort and safety. Prepare now to keep your dog warm and safe during the cold winter months.

Desi The Bulldog Knows This Cupcake Is Very Suspect

When it’s somebody’s birthday and they ask for a birthday cake, you give them an actual cake, not a cupcake. Some would argue that it’s semantics. After all, a cupcake is just a smaller and cup-shaped piece of cake. But for others, there’s a difference and not acknowledging it could drastically change one’s birthday celebration. That probably explains why Desi the bulldog is so upset. He doesn’t care what hoops his human jumped through to get him a special dog-friendly cupcake (or “pupcake”) for his birthday. He wanted an actual sheet cake, one that he could stuff his face in. As a result, Desi doesn’t want anything to do with his birthday treat. In fact, he even thinks it’s an abomination to all desserts and starts growling and pouncing at the baked good, questioning why it’s still here even though he clearly doesn’t want it. It’s also safe to assume that Desi is taking his anger out on the cupcake because he feels just a wee bit self-conscious about getting older. It’s okay, Desi. If you don’t want to eat that cupcake, we will. Here’s hoping the rest of your birthday celebration was cupcake-free.

Tillman The Skateboarding Bulldog Dies At 10

Tillman the skateboarding bulldog first shot to fame in 2007 when his owner Ron Davis posted a video of him on YouTube of riding a skateboard. Shortly after the video became world famous getting millions of views.

Since then Tillman has been made it in to the guiness book of world records for "fastest skateboarding bulldog"vand been featured in an Iphone commercial. He even had a bronze statue made of him.

His owner reported htat tillman had experienced and irregular heart beat nad deveopld a heart muscle disease. On October 27 tillman passed away at the tender age of 10.

The funny thing about Tillman though was that Ron could never get him to do typical tricks like roll over. During an interview Ron Davis commented several times how Tillman was more like a brother and a friend to him than a pet.

A Very Confused Yet Brave Bulldog Lifeguard Saves His Brother

Most Bulldogs know that they are not made for the water. In fact they sink like a rock. Jäger the English bulldog seems to know this. Jager refuses to let her brother play in the pool, even though he's wearing his own little life vest. Every time Jager's bother tries to get back in to the pool Jager immediately "rescues" him and drags him back to safety.

French Bulldogs Are Quickly Becoming The Designer Dog Of Choice In The UK and US

In the past other dog breeds have been more popular than the french bulldog but the "Gloucester Citizen" reports that they are beginning to become the most popular breed of choice. Its not hard to understand since they have so much more character and aren't as yappy as a chihuahua's generally.

Historically other breeds have been more popular like the poodle mixes like: yorkipoo, labradoodle, maltipoo, golden doodle, shnoodle, and a few others like chihuahua, la-shi,or puggle. But lately especially in the world of celebrities there has been a need breed taking over. Thanks to social media and actors like Tom Hardy, Sam Smith, Hugh Jackman and even Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson.

Numbers from a kennel club there show a dramatic increase of 458% in 5 years.

This huge jump in demand is actually worrying since puppy mills have a tendency to start breeding the most popular pups. Typically French bulldogs while being an excellent breed can be a little more costly than other breeds usually costing between 1500-8000$ US. In addition they have a few more health issues as well like degenerative myelopathy, hereditary cataracts and neurological disease." If unscrupulous breeders start breeding them they will likely create an even unhealthier breed of the dog.

"The Rock" French Bulldog Just Died: What You Can Learn From It.

Dwayne the Rock Johnson's adopted french bulldog "Brutus" died last September. Dwayne had originally adopted Brutus from an animal shelter. Brutus died after eating poisonous mushroom while on a daily walk in a park.

Brutus never had the best of luck after almost drowning in a pool last Labour day. Johnson shared with his readers that he had to jump in and save the little guy, who just couldn't perfect the "doggy" paddle in time. this time however the rock was a little more serious.
"Another reminder we have to live and love as greatly as we can today, because tomorrow is never guaranteed. At approximately 11:15pm last night myself and @laurenhashianofficial had to make the painful decision to end Brutus' suffering by taking him off of life support and sending his soul to pup heaven. I held his lil' paw as he was finally at peace. As all puppies and dogs do, he ate a mushroom while playing outside with his brother Hobbs. This mushroom happened to have a lethal toxicity and within hours it was rapidly destroying his liver and immune system to the point of no return. I encourage all of you out there to be mindful of mushrooms in your yards, parks or anywhere outside your dogs play. What looks innocent, can be deadly to your lil' family members. Thank you Dr. Deckelbaum and Dr. West and the incredibly caring nurses and staff at The Animal Medical Center At Cooper City. We'll always love you Brutus.. and you'll always be my lil' main man and rough housing Brute."

Although this was tragic accident we can learn a few things about it and hopefully prevent another death like this. Some symptoms of mushroom poisoning in dogs include:

Vomiting
Diarrhea
Abdominal pain
Weakness
Lethargy
Yellowing of the skin (jaundice)
Uncoordinated movements
Excessive drooling (ptyalism)
Seizures
Coma

Other commonly found poisonous foods found around most households include

A Miami Woman's French Bulldog Ate Her Wedding Ring

When Jessica Farah's suddenly realized her wedding ring went missing at home last Wednesday she was thinking up ideas of where is might be. At the same time she heard her french bulldog Tux chewing on something that sounded like metal.

At first she assumed it was the dogs collar, since a previous dog of her brothers did the same thing. Later after tearing the house apart it dawned on her that Tux had dined on the expensive treat.

First thing Thursday morning she took Tux the the local vet where they confirmed the ring was indeed deep in the dogs belly.

With the help of doctors at Miami Veterinary Specialists, they used an endoscope to remove the ring from Tux’s mouth and return it to his owner.

His caregivers to affectionately nickname him "half the bulldog with twice the love."

Bulldog Breeder With An Arm Ripped By His Own Dogs Off Is Being Charged

A bulldog that had been living outdoors amidst unsanitary conditions, surrounded by her own waste, has finally found a forever home, all thanks to the RSPCA.

Betty, a two-year-old bulldog with white and brown fur, was discovered in a dire situation by East Cambridgeshire Police and the RSPCA. She had been enduring the squalor of a dirty outbuilding along with two other dogs on the property in Cambridgeshire back in March of the previous year.

Betty, her bulldog companion Wilma, and a terrier cross named Gabbi were rescued and taken to the RSPCA Blackberry Farm Centre in Aylesbury. There, they received the care and attention they desperately needed before eventually finding new homes.

Sam Chisholme, a 43-year-old resident of Linslade in Bedfordshire, welcomed Betty into his home in March of this year. He shared, "She now enjoys a significantly improved life, spending most of her time going on walks and enjoying quality time with me, my three-year-old bulldog Riley, and my son Callum. Betty is now in excellent health and has a remarkably calm demeanor. You would never guess from her temperament that she had endured such a traumatic experience. She is a wonderful companion to have around."

Mr. Chisholme, an engineer, has always had a fondness for bulldogs and has had them as part of his family for the past two decades. He mentioned, "She adores her walks and, for a bulldog, she is quite active and healthy. In comparison, Riley gets tired much more quickly than she does."

Betty, now two and a half years old, has embraced her new home and companions, a far cry from her previous living conditions where she was confined to a six-foot by three-foot outbuilding and forced to eat near a pile of her own waste.

RSPCA Inspector Alex Coghlan, who was responsible for rescuing the dogs from the Cambridgeshire property, expressed, "It's heartwarming to witness these dogs find loving homes, especially Betty, who was in such a distressing state when we found her. Witnessing her receive the happy ending she deserves is truly rewarding."

Both Wilma and Gabbi have also been successfully rehomed by the RSPCA. Wilma now relishes her new life and has a fellow bulldog companion, while Gabbi was joyfully adopted by an RSPCA volunteer.

To support the RSPCA's ongoing efforts in rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in dire need of care, please consider visiting their website at www.rspca.org.uk/give or texting LOVE to 87023 to donate.
